What is Matlab Simulink?

Simulink, as mentioned earlier, is a MATLAB plugin with an attractive, user-friendly interface for simulatingcomputer programmingand modelling. With this tool, any user can quickly and easily create virtual prototypes to explore a variety of design concepts at any level of detail with minimal effort. You don't need any prior experience to use this platform. Simply use the extensive collection of pre-configured blocks to build graphical models of your system using drag and drop to get started with your mouse. It can represent nonlinear and linear systems in continuous time, sampling time, or a combination of both.

As students learn more effectively through frequent feedback, the interactive nature of Simulink encourages experimentation; you can change settings on the fly and quickly see what's going on, allowing for "what if" research. Finally, and most importantly, Simulink is coupled with MATLAB, making it easy to transfer data between two applications.

Using Matlab Simulink

Simulink has already been used to simulate many dynamical systems. Simulink includes a range of features to suit your needs, both simple and advanced. For example, you can simulate a bouncing ball, a hydraulic cylinder, a thermal house, and so on.

Another popular application of Simulink is the modeling and simulation of a wide range of automotive systems. You can model and simulate the car and its surroundings and create control algorithms for automotive applications. Powertrain Blockset contains fully completed models of reference powertrains in cars, such as gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric systems. The vehicle dynamics block set includes fully constructed application reference models that simulate driving motion in 3D.

Matlab Simulink foundation

Learning how to get started with Simulink is one of the core concepts.

Follow the steps below:

  • Step 1: To get started, select the Simulink icon on the MATLAB toolbar.
  • Step 2: Then in the MATLAB command prompt, type "Simulink" and then go back to the beginning.
  • Step 3: You should now see the Simulink Library Browser. Then, in the library browser, select New and then Model from the File drop-down menu.
  • Step 4: A blank window, commonly known as the model window, will appear. Models are typically drawn and modified in this model window using mouse commands.

Simulink elements fall into two categories: lines and blocks.

Signals are generated, modified, combined, outputted and displayed using blocks. On the other hand, lines are used to transfer data from one block to another.

How does Simulink work in Matlab?

Now let's see how Simulink works in Matlab:

  • As mentioned earlier, you must first run Simulink before following the instructions below.
  • You will now see three library blocks on the board: Simulink, Search Results and Frequently Used. You need to select a Simulink library from these three options, then you will see a list of libraries on the right. It has a number of scientific and technical libraries.
  • Now you need to work out the basic building blocks. To do this, go to your library and select the "new" option. A new system design window will open.
  • Then select the blocks needed to build the system blocks. Here it's easier for you because you can just drag and drop. Otherwise, press the left mouse button to continue.
  • This is the last step. At the top of the window there is a small green icon that is used to run the model.

How to build a Matlab Simulink model

  1. First, you need to create a new model by selecting New from the File menu. You will see an empty model window. Then, in the library browser, select the Assets icon. This will open the Resources window which contains the resource block library. These sources are mainly used to generate signals.
  2. From the assets window, drag the clock and sine blocks to the left side of the model window.
  3. After clicking the Sink symbol in the Library Browser, drag the Range and To Workspace blocks to the model view.
  4. To open the Signal Routing window, click the Signal Routing icon in the library browser.
  5. Drag a Mux block to the model view and open the Maths window by clicking the Maths icon in the library browser.
  6. Add a reinforcement block to the model view by dragging it there.
  7. Select blocks by left-clicking while the cursor is over a block. Place the cursor in one of the corners and hold down the left mouse button. When the block is the size you want, move the mouse and release the mouse button.
  8. To move a block, you must first select it. Then, keeping the cursor in the block, hold down the left mouse button. Release the mouse button after dragging the block to a new location.
  9. Now you can use the tap to connect the sine wave output to the input of the Mux block. However, please note that if you plan to design a branch line, the process will be slightly different as the branch line must first be welded to the existing line.
  10. Place the cursor on the line connecting the sine wave block to the gain block. Without moving the mouse, hold down the CTRL key and then the left mouse button. Release the mouse button after dragging the cursor to the input port of the Mux block.

Simulink examples

Simulink is also used to model signal processing systems using the DSP System Toolbox software in the Simulink environment. The DSP System Toolbox contains methods and tools for the design and simulation of signal processing systems. These functions are available as MATLAB system objects, MATLAB functions, and Simulink blocks. Indeed, the toolkit provides users with several easy-to-use ways to generate FFTs, multi-speed processing, custom IIR and FIR filters, and DSP approaches to streaming processing and real-time prototyping.

Consider using a Simulink controller. Developing tools for designing and evaluating operating systems presented in the Simulink environment. Simulink Control Design is an extension of Simulink that allows you to locate operating points and calculate the exact linearization of Simulink models in various operational situations. Simulink Control Design includes tools to calculate frequency responses based on simulations without changing the model.
