Specialized Allez 2020 (2023)

This entry-level Specialized Allez is impressive, from the great frame to the high-end finishing kit for just £649, making it one of the best sub-grand bikes on the market. There is also a return to full fender lugs on the forks, although there is little ground clearance.

The first time I rode the Allez in a new style in 2018 - the so-calledElite model- and I was impressed.

> Find your nearest dealer here

In case you haven't read the reviews: Specialized basically took their aluminum road bike and reduced the angles a bit, raised the front end, extended the wheelbase and fitted fenders to create a bike that's perfectly suited for commuting or winter training. It achieved all this without losing the fun and addictive ride of the Allez. Good job.

However, things went wrong after this inspection and Specialized had to recall the bikes due to fork issues. The replacements had no fender lugs, but they were brought back to the latest version.

ride

The first time I rode the Allez, it was just a quick walk around the neighborhood to make sure everything was ready… About 20 miles and back home.

The ride was so comfortable and enjoyable even though I was away three times and came home with a big smile on my face. It is easy to drive and easy to operate which meant I was able to focus on the scenery and just enjoy the experience.

Specialized Allez 2020 (1)

Handling is fairly neutral, which suits commuters who commute the same route every day in different weather conditions and poke their way through traffic jams if necessary, but if you've had a rough day and want to unload yourself, you can step on the pedals and go all out on your way to home.

It's an exciting bike to ride and it's easy to get that little adrenaline rush when you're really there. If you have confidence, you can certainly take risks.

Specialized Allez 2020 (2)

The total weight is 9.66 kg, which is quite a good value for a bike up to 700 lbs. It climbs well and acceleration does not seem too difficult.

Still think aluminum frames are rough? Well, step on one of them and you'll realize that they certainly aren't. Specialized has always provided a comfortable ride on their aluminum bikes, and the latest Allez builds continue that theme.

Specialized Allez 2020 (3)

Frame and fork

The Allez uses Specialized's own E5 Premium aluminum alloy tubing in a variety of shapes and diameters, finished with fairly smooth welds, and what I consider a very nice paint job. If you don't like bright red, there's the option of satin black or Dusty Lilac with yellow to white graphics.

Specialized Allez 2020 (4)

Up front, you have a tapered head tube, but in slightly different sizes from 1 1/8 inches to 1 3/8 inches compared to most bikes. There are many options on the market when it needs to be replaced.

Specialized Allez 2020 (5)

The downtube has a large square section for stiffness, and the chainstays are stiff enough to transfer power from the legs to the pedals.

Specialized Allez 2020 (6)

Specialized lowered the seatstays for aerodynamic reasons; not a big deal for this type of bike, but hey, every second counts. And they're thin, giving you a little more comfort in the back. They also have rack mounts.

Specialized Allez 2020 (7)

It's good to see that this type of bike has a threaded bottom bracket cover - the fact that it's designed for a fender mount means it'll probably stand up to a lot of wet weather. Frame-mounted bottom brackets are generally more resistant to water and dirt ingress, which can cause the press-fit alternatives to squeak.

Specialized Allez 2020 (8)

The fork is full carbon, which is impressive for the money. As I mentioned earlier, the full fender mounts are on the underside of each leg, and as far as fender mounting is concerned, it's relatively easy.

Specialized Allez 2020 (9)

I supplied a full chrome SKS cover and the positions of the lugs mean there is not much to do, although the gap between the cover and the 25mm headband is very small. The stock wheels are narrow, making the tire thin, so if you upgrade to newer, wider rims that increase the nominal tire size by 25mm, there won't be much daylight left.

Specialized Allez 2020 (10)

The fork itself is stiff enough for fast cornering on the descent.

Specialized Allez 2020 (11)

Buy a group

Some might smile at the thought of running a Shimano Claris groupset, but let me tell you something, it's good. You have the same look, shifting and feel as the Sora and Tiagra, but you sacrifice a few gears for the cassette. If you're not familiar, Claris has 8 speeds, Sora has 9 speeds, and Tiagra has 10 speeds.

> Complete Shimano groupset guide

The Sunrace 11-32t option gives you plenty of top and bottom sprockets, even if there is little space between the sprockets.

Specialized Allez 2020 (12)

(Video) Affordable Speed - 2020 Specialized Allez E5 Aluminum Road Bike Feature Review and Weight

Added to this is the Shimano Claris R200 crankset, which uses a square tapered bottom bracket and 50/34t chainrings. It's pretty old-fashioned, but it works, and the shifter was fine. Upgrading to the newer Claris R2000 crankset and bottom bracket would set in around £90 if you wanted the full kit look. It would also start a whole motorcycle trend.

Specialized Allez 2020 (13)

Specialized Tektro twin axles for braking and they do a good job. They're not the best, but they offer a degree of power and feel that isn't scary when you're constantly braking in traffic.

Specialized Allez 2020 (14)

Finishing kit

The rest of the set is our own brand: handlebar, handle and seat bar. Everything is made of aluminum and works properly.

Specialized Allez 2020 (15)

You also get a Specialized Body Geometry Bridge saddle with steel rails for great comfort.

Specialized Allez 2020 (16)

Wheels and tires

Axis Sport wheels have a 20-spoke design at the front and a 24-spoke design at the rear. They are not among the lightest, but I never had the feeling that they interfere with my riding. They stayed true during testing and I would only change them to something lighter if they wore out.

Specialized Allez 2020 (17)

Tires are also supplied by Specialized: these are Espoir Sport models in size 700x25 mm. They're covered in wire so they're quite heavy and changing to something foldable and lighter would make a big difference, although I wouldn't be in too much of a rush. Traction is good enough wet and dry and rolling resistance is fine too.

Specialized Allez 2020 (18)

Value

Competition comes from peersLongcliffe Forme'a 2which is exactly the same price.

It is heavier than the Specialized at 10.5kg, and the Allez has a better ride feel. But on the other hand, the Longcliffe can handle 28mm tires with full covers.

> Buyer's Guide: 11 of the best road bikes from £500 to £750

Another option may beVitus Razor VR. For the 2020 version, it returned to a design similar to previous iterations, with a longer wheelbase and reintroduced fender mounts. It's a bit heavier than the Allez but costs just £549.99 for a similar build.

Application

Overall, the Allez is a much better bike than any spec list or ranking one might believe. I have ridden many bikes that cost ten times as much as this one, but the Allez left one of the greatest impressions. However, if you want to use it all year round, the lack of covers/spacers for the front tire may be an issue.

Precipitate

Huge performance on a minimal budget, but I'd like to see a little more room up front

Tell us what the bike is for and for whom. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does this relate to your feelings about the bike?

Specialized says, “Too often corners are cut to meet prices in the entry-level road bike market, but the Allez redefines what it means to be “basic.” Allez is the first to make technology available to everyone. new to road cycling, commuting or looking for a new bike, the Allez is as powerful as it is versatile.

This Allez is equipped with reliable Shimano Claris gearing, durable Axis Sport aluminum wheels, our new super comfortable Body Geometry Bridge saddle and well-protected Espoir Sport tyres.

Not only does a lightweight bike feel better going uphill, but it's also essential when you're carrying your bike up to the 5th floor, and that was at the forefront of the frame design. With a redesigned E5 alloy frame, the Allez is the heaviest in its class. Aggressively thin-walled yet stiff tubes have been used to save weight, resulting in a reduction of over 450g (1lb) in the frame and fork alone compared to some models from the past.

Entry-level road bikes often have alloy forks or cheap carbon fiber forks that significantly reduce the overall ride quality. But thanks to the full carbon FACT Allez fork, it's more agile, smoother to ride and lighter - it floats over rough seals and corners like a slalom skier.

For geometry, we developed the Allez using our large Retül fit database. That meant creating a geometry that was sure to cover a wide range of positions while still delivering the performance-oriented handling you'd expect from a first bike.

This Allez also has integrated rack mounts and mudguards, so you can carry the weight of your pack on a lightweight rack. This not only makes it a good racing bike, but also allows you to turn it into a fast commuter bike.”

The spacing of the fender limits the Allez a bit as a year-round trainer, but without that, it's one of the best entry-level aluminum bikes out there.

Where is this model on offer? Tell us briefly about the cheaper and more expensive options

This is the basic property of Allez. The Allez Sport gets a Shimano Sora groupset and Praxis chains for £849, while the 105 comes with Elite for £1,049.
