A high school resume is a structured, professional-looking document. It contains information about your education, achievements, qualifications, work experience, skills and awards.

First, let's start with some common questions students ask about high school resumes.

How important is a high school resume for college applications?

Your resume usually does not lead to acceptance or outright rejection.

But a well-formatted high school resume can help you beg for acceptance.

Similarly, a poorly designed resume with lots of grammatical errors and lies can reduce your chances of being accepted.

What is the best approach to writing a resume?

Resumes are the bestconcise and full of relevant information.

Remember that admissions officers and admissions managers are busy people, so you need to include important information in your high school resume while keeping your achievements concise and to the point.

Finally, your resume must be properly formatted. A properly formatted resume is pleasing to the eye and will therefore be much more enjoyable to read.

  • Recruitment officers and hiring managers pay more attention to resumes that are easy to scan and digest.

Keep these four things in mind when writing a high school resume:

  • The content should be concise
  • All relevant information should be included
  • The CV format should be easy and pleasant to read; anything that looks sloppy reflects badly on you
  • Try to keep your resume as close to one page as possible. More than one page is fine for high school resumes, but later in your career you'll start to get annoyed.

Should I use an online template for my resume?

As a CV expert, I highly recommend itTo preventcopy and paste templates online.

Why? Every student is different. What may work for someone else may not work for you.

  • Some students have excellent academic results but poor performance in extracurricular activities.
  • Some are business oriented while others are liberal arts oriented.

This means that you have to design your resume from scratch. You will not only build a CV tailored to your needs, but you will do itbuild resume skillsthat you will keep forever. These skills will be useful in college and beyond.

How should I format my high school resume?

There are a few general rules to follow when creating a resume for school, internship and work.

  • Use Times New Roman or Cambria on your CV. These fonts are easy to read.
  • Regular font size should be 10-12. Headings should be at least two points larger than the font.
  • Separate each section (Contact, Education, Experience, Skills) with an underlined and/or bold heading.
  • Keep margins to 1 inch. If you want to shorten the length of your resume, margins of 0.5 are fine. Everything is less reflected in the eyes.

What information should my high school curriculum vitae contain?

In summary, your high school resume should include the following:

  • Contact details: name and surname, e-mail address, telephone number, address
  • Education: high school name, GPA, test scores, class placement, courses, achievements and awards
  • Experience: employment, volunteering and out-of-school qualifications
  • Skills: computer skills, foreign languages

How can I format each section?

Now you know what makes a good CV. Now let's get down to the details.

This is how you format each section.

To do

Your name should be in bold at the top. The font size may match the headings, and your name may be one or two points larger than the headings.

Contact

This information will appear directly below your name.

Provide the name and surname used in the application for studies.

Under your name, put your mobile number andprofessionale-mail address.

Format your mobile phone correctly. This means you have two options:

  1. Your area code is surrounded by parentheses and a dash after the first three digits of the number. Example - (536) 276-6690
  2. No parentheses, but dashes after the area code and the first three digits of the number. Example - 536-276-6690

If your current email address[email protected], it's time to create a new email. Use Gmail because it's secure and works with the G Suite platform you'll use a lot in college.

A secure email is a message containing your initial, last name and the last two digits of your year of birth. For example:

Finally, you can enter your home address if you wish. Entering your home address is optional.

Goal

You don't need an objective section. Most goals are common sense. These are clichés that add no value to the document.

Education

The education part is easy as long as you know your academic details. Follow these steps.

Enter high school, city and date of graduation:

List your GPA (unweighted/weighted) and best test scores below:

Average Success: 3.45/4.2 | SAT: 1350 | GRADE II Mathematics: 710 | HOUR TWO America's History: 680

Then list your rewards just below your GPA. Under your awards, write "Coursework:" and enter your highest, most prestigious grades. When applying for an internship or job offer in a specific industry, you can set up related courses.

Subject: AP Chemistry, AP Biology, APWorld history, Spanish awards

If you are a freshman, sophomore or junior, you can also add a "Design Courses" section where you will add the courses you need to take next year.

In addition, students of all grades must add an "Awards" section. List your rewards in the Presentation Work/Recommended School Work section. Here's what it would look like:

Experience

Now the fun begins. The quality of this section determines the overall strength of your resume. There are a few important tips to keep in mind before diving into this section.

First, experience titles should be formatted evenly.

  • Keep necessary elements in italics.
  • Don't make everything bold for emphasis.
  • You must have two or more points to qualify.
  • When entering the location ("city, state") of your qualifications, make sure it uses the same format as "city, state" in the contact section. If "Washington, DC" is listed in the contacts section, do not add points from "DC" to the "Experience" section. In general, watch out for inconsistencies when adding dots to country abbreviations - stick to one version: with or without dots.

Secondly, the images must be properly formatted.

  • All projectiles must be fragmentsverbs. Don't write in the first person (e.g. "I collaborated").
  • Graphic labels cannot end in periods.
  • Choose specific action verbs. Try to avoid weak action verbs like "did", "helped" and "helped" among others.
  • Action verbs must be in the past tense (e.g. "collaborated" and "managed") unless you are describing an experience you are currently part of. In this case,your action verbsmust be first person singular (e.g. "collaborate" and "manage").
  • Your most recent roles should be at the top. This means that you keep the reverse chronological order.
  • To combine similar activities in one period, separate them with a semicolon.

Third, your points can be any of the following:

  • Summer job
  • Volunteering
  • Work for the common good
  • Activities
  • Scene
  • Informal work (childcare)

Fourth, points must be specific. Try to tell a story. Add results.

  • Include numbers, numbers, percentages, or anything else that shows you can get results.
  • If you're having trouble coming up with details to include, think about who, what, when, where, why, and how you do your tasks.
  • Remember that the recruitment officer and recruitment manager do not know who you are, so it is your job to present your qualifications.

Here are some great examples of bullet points in high school resumes:

Monitors 20 students per facility; taught three students in daily individual swimming lessons, achieving 100% pass rate

She works: These credits can be used in the extracurricular activities section of your college application.

Does it make any sense? Good. Let's see what a properly formatted experience section looks like.

  1. Enter the name of the workplace or club in the top line.
  2. Additionally, save the location.
  3. Write your position in italics on the next line.
  4. Next to the position, enter the date (month - month year) in which you worked in this position. Printing the whole month is not important; it's important to stick to the format for all your experiences.
  5. The bullets are below the position and date.

For example:

SM Pediatrics and Healthcare, Portland, OR
trainee, September 2018-December 2018

  • Coordinating daily visits and arranging reception appointments for over 50 patients
  • Simplified insurance documentation and patient satisfaction guarantee additional payment
  • Created a new filing system for office workers, saving 30 minutes of time; integrated Trello with office project management by running tutorials on the platform

Repeat this several times until you cover all relevant activities, work experiences, and tasks.

Skills

This section usually focuses on two elements: computer and language.

Make a "Computer" list of things you can do well with, you guessed it, a computer. This can include coding, graphic design, PowerPoint, CMS and software.

In the computer section, enter "Language:" if you know a foreign language. Make a list by specifying the language and, in parentheses, your level of knowledge. There are four levels of a foreign language:

  • Knowledge of your mother tongue or bilingual language - you can read and write fluently; you can do business and live abroad with your skills
  • Professional hands-on knowledge – You can do business in the language, but you don't know all the cultural norms
  • Limited ability to work - you can read and write here and there, but you would not be able to run business smoothly.
  • Basic skills - you have poor reading and writing skills, but you can carry on a conversation from time to time

In general, the "Skills" section should look like this:

Underlining is the safest way to broadcast your resume. They make it easy to organize your resume so recruiting officers and hiring managers don't lose sight of it.

Moving forward: updating your resume

Over the years, you need to update your resume. Take 30 minutes to add every few monthsexperience and responsibilitiesthat will help you reach your next opportunity.

  • As you get older, your resume will need to be more specialized.

This means you have more experience, tasks, qualifications, skills and moreBibliographyrelated to your business and desired position.

Between the last year of high school and college, your CV will look completely different.

  • To make sure you stay up-to-date (or upgrade!), use a notebook on your smartphone to keep track of your tasks and responsibilities.
  • If you've been asked to do something new, expand yoursskillsor develop talents, add them to your CV.
  • A notepad on your smartphone is a handy tool when you sit down to write your resume - it keeps your memory fresh and prevents writer's block.
